Really you should have a tri or quad core for "serious" emulation.

#XPADDER 5.3 FORUM WINDOWS#

While the emulator can only make use of 2 cores (4 now, but from what I've seen it's really putting a heavy strain on only 2 of them and leaving the other two lightly loaded with the hack enabled) you do give windows access to the other 2 cores and whatever background stuff you are doing. ( ) Really its probably not even worth that price tag and your better off going with an i5 and a new motherboard if your current CPU can't get you what you need.

That thread should set you straight, if you built the computer you most likely will be able to comprehend what is in the thread and gain enough understanding of the risks to properly evaluate if its worth it.įor reference I'm using a 955. Really doing it inside of windows is a ton easier.īut you would overclock in BIOS generally, you really should go to the overclocking thread ( ) Really though if you don't know what you are doing you can kill your processor. The phenom II I'm using is a quad core, if you are using a Black Edition Phenom II you can use AMD Overdrive to overclock in windows and have it automatically find a stable clock.

I happen to have a dual core AMD Athlon 2.90 GH but how do I overclock for better results? All my ps2 games do is stutter and precautions on overclocking would be nice You may need an aftermarket heatsink.Ģ) Yeah, the emulator and AMD don't get along. Its currently idling at 40c though so maybe AMD just really doesn't like the emulator, though I think its my complete lack of case fans (I've used this case for 9 years and all the motors burned out on the fans I really need to buy some new fans).ġ) 78C? I remember Phenom IIs not being meant for more than 62. As it is even with the 4 core hack 2 cores still get very loaded, running the emulator brings 2 of my cores up to 78c and the other 2 settle around 65c (I think I have some serious cooling issues I need to look into). That said I'd love to play PS2 on an i7, or even an i5, but I don't have the money. Most games do have a dipping point where I end up having to play at 30FPS for so for 2-3 minutes (and this sucks) its not completely stable and sometimes my FPS get jumpy, but it IS playable. I've been emulating the PS2 on and off for years, and really an AMD processor can run still acceptably. Hell I can normally crank out 120-240FPS which can really speed up battle. But overall I'd imagine if the exact same parts of the PS2 were being used an RPG would be less demanding then an FPS.

I'm sure RPGs are less demanding, or maybe not you are emulating a system not running the game so it can really be up in the air. I get 60FPS in the game's I've tried (mostly RPGs because I was really into them when the PS2 came out so I have a ton of half played ones). I've had good luck with 3.2Ghz Phenom II. Emulating something like a PS2 is a Herculean feat for a laptop.Īll ice cream is now for all beings, no matter how many legs.ĪMD processors may need the multicore hack more than they'd like no matter their clock speed. You MIGHT get somewhere by overclocking, but then you'll fry your system. A 560 Ti or a 6950 could probably set and forget 6x Native.įor the record, your processor has a fourth fewer cycles than it would need, and a third fewer than would be desirable.

#XPADDER 5.3 FORUM 1080P#

Otherwise you'll need a dedicated GPU, and yeah at that point an 8800 GTX (or for that matter anything worth buying now) should take you to 1600x1200 or 1080p just fine. I5s and i7s can get away with a little less, or in some cases don't even need to.įor a video card: You'd probably get native resolution out of modern Intel graphics, but that's only on second generation Core processors. AMD processors may need the multicore hack more than they'd like no matter their clock speed. 3400 (maybe 3333?) seems to be the Magic Number, though. PCSX2 likes instruction sets too (it actually gets a benefit out of AVX, for God's sake).ģ000 MHz might might MIGHT cut it if you use the multicore speedhack (it lets you use all your cores, instead of just two). Just how powerful does your system need to be? I thought this was good enough.Įmulators like cycles.
